some people really love surprises. some people really don’t. can you guess which statement goes with which person in our relationship (the answer can be found on our about section)? ok, i’ll fess up, surprises tend to totally stress me out. i’m someone who likes to plan things out, do a few practice runs in my head of what the events may look like and then still stress out about it (yes, it’s exhausting). ravery on the other hand absolutely looooves surprises. he has expressed to me that he would love if i just packed his suitcase, drove us to the airport and flew to an unknown destination either for a night or 2 weeks. just the very thought of someone else packing my suitcase sends me over the edge. since we can’t quite afford a surprise trip, i decided instead to surprise him with a sunset sail down the willamette river!
all he knew was that snacks were involved (duh), he could request one special treat from the grocery store (he chose sushi-strange i know) and to bring a jacket. he had no idea what we were doing. this made me very happy because even though i don’t love surprises, i really enjoy giving them to ravery because he gets so excited so yay me for not slipping up! he watched me pack up our snack backpack (yes, a whole backpack was required), we drove to a park and then wound around to the docks, where i revealed our sunset sail. he immediately started jumping up and down. we walked down to the docks to wait for our captain and found a massive blackberry bush! we immediately got to filling up what was supposed to be my wine cup with blackberries.
then we turned around and saw this very strange boat on moster truck wheels barreling towards us. a few people pedaling it designed and made it and were headed out to sea (or river). it must have been well designed because it was still afloat when we saw them an hour later!
we boarded the boat with 2 other couples and we each pulled out our snacks and goodies to get the party started!
basically we just took a lot of pictures because it was so dang pretty and romantic! we have never been on a sailboat together before so it was a fun new experience for us. ravery even got to steer the boat and quickly found out you must actually pay attention because sails actually propel the boat quite well. ha! here are our model pictures.
below are some hysterical pictures. the first one of us standing we also posted on facebook and got some hysterical feedback about how ravery’s hand looks both awkward and totally fake. what do you think? the other picture is what i will most likely include on the book jacket of the non-existent book i’ve authored.
we had such a fun evening together! exploring different views of the city via water, meeting new people and learning more about the great city we live in. keep your eyes on those deal sites, that’s how we found our adventure with sail scovare!
life lesson: even if you have a thousand things going on, there should always be time for each other. also, make sure you do things for your partner/spouse/friend/family that they find particularly exciting…it actually does make it more fun for both!
questions:
have you ever been sailing before?
what is something you love about your city? (for me, it’s the fact we live so close to water!)
what snacks would you bring on a boat trip? (ours included ravery’s treat of sushi, tillamook aged white cheddar cheese, wheat thins ((duh)), triskets, wine, carrots, sugar snap peas, hummus, grapes, cherries and fig newtons)

“Have you ever been sailing before” is a loaded question for our family. Don’t get us started on the hundreds of times we have been sailing. Captain Paul will talk your leg off. lol
