Naughty Knee

x-rays are neat. and check out those veins!

as many of you know, ravery had knee surgery in the beginning of april to get an extra bone (the size of a marble) removed that was growing off of his kneecap. what an overachiever. so the healing process took forever, his knee was in pretty bad shape and he was on crutches for about 8 weeks. then he could start moving around without his crutches but the pain in his knee didn’t really go away. and then another bump popped up and the doctor said the bone could be growing back. nothing like spending close to $2k to have a bone removed just to have it grow back! ravery went back to the doctor’s this week to get another x-ray and talk about options.

the growth is semi-invisible on an x-ray but you can feel it in real life. and he’ll let you.

we found out that thank goodness the bone isn’t growing back but instead the bump and pain is being caused by some fibery material that leaked out from the healing bone. yes, he will be cutting back on his oatmeal and bran muffin consumption to decrease fiber intake. his choices are to do nothing (not an option because it is giving him pain and he can’t workout or be as active as he wants to), try physical therapy (lindsey, where are you when we need you!) or have another surgery (ahhhhhh). he decided to deal with making this decision after we get back from the world championship of public speaking in august (if you click the link and scroll to the bottom…you will find his name! so excited and proud!).

his doctor recommended that he go for a little jog and see how long he can go before it really starts hurting (a little odd…but okay). so he came home and said “do you want to go for a short run with me?” and if he would have asked me 6 months ago my response would have been “HA! hahaha. yeah right. see ya!” and i would have gone back to eating my mac-n-cheese. but i’m in a different place now and can’t eat mac-n-cheese until august 10th so i simply responded with “yes! grab my sweatband.”

body hair and sweatband…you’re welcome.

we ran for a mile along the waterfront and he kept saying “omg…we’re like the sexy, athletic running couple. i never would have guessed that. ever! omg!” ha! and it’s true. i wouldn’t have guessed it either but we can change! it was fun to get a little exercise in together, be outside (you know i love it) and teach ravery running etiquette (like you can’t take up the whole side walk). it was quite enjoyable.

life lesson: take stock of how well your body functions. if you can walk without assistance or pain, appreciate that. if you can breathe without an oxygen tank, be thankful. if your fingers work the way you want them to, notice that.

question: what gear do you sport that people tease you about? (mine is a sweatband. but it’s so necessary because i sweat profusely and it burns my eyes. i plan on wearing this constantly while in orlando in august).

Great life lesson! Most people don’t realize how precious these things are until they no longer have them. Thanks for the post and update. Proud of you Ryan for speaking at the world championship! Good luck with your healing process.

thanks for commenting jackie! and it’s so true that we get so accustomed to the way things ‘should’ work and don’t really realize it until something bad happens. thanks for your well wishes to ryan as well!
